Solution

  1. An object is said to be in motion if its position changes with respect to its surroundings and time.
  2. Different objects undergo different types of motion.
  3. For example; the motion of a car on a road is different from the movement of a fan or a bird flying.
  4. Motion can be categorized into translator, rotatory, oscillatory, vibratory, periodic, non-periodic, multiple, and random motion.
  5. If a body exhibits more than one type of motion at the same time, then such a body is said to have multiple motions.
  6. Thus we can say that it is possible that a body can have two or more two types of motion simultaneously.

For example:

a) The motion of earth:

  1. The earth keeps on rotating on its axis.
  2. As well as revolves around the sun in a curved (elliptical) path in a fixed time interval.

b) Drawing water from the well:

  1. In a well, the pulley on which the rope runs exhibits circular motion.
  2. And the bucket joined at one end of the rope shows linear motion.

c) A vehicle moving on a straight road:

  1. A vehicle moves in a linear motion and its wheels rotate in a circular motion.
  2. Also while cycling, the tyres of a cycle rotate but the cycle moves in the forward linear direction.

d) Motion of a drilling machine:

  1. A drilling machine that is used to make a hole in wood exhibits two types of motion simultaneously.
  2. During drilling, it is being rotated (rotatory motion) and at the same time, it is also getting pushed forward into the wood (translatory motion).
