Solution

Mariculture is a specialized branch of aquaculture involving the cultivation of marine organisms for food and other products in the open ocean, an enclosed section of the ocean, or in tanks, ponds or raceways which are filled with seawater. Sustainable mariculture promises economic and environmental benefits. Economies of scale imply that ranching can produce fish at lower cost than industrial fishing, leading to better human diets and the gradual elimination of unsustainable fisheries. Maricultured fish are also perceived to be of higher quality than fish raised in ponds or tanks, and offer more diverse choice of species. Consistent supply and quality control has enabled integration in food market channels.

Aquaculture is the farming of fish, molluscs, aquatic plants and other organisms. Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions, and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish.Aquaculture can take place in natural bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, marshland (which would be freshwater aquaculture) and the ocean (which is marine aquaculture).Fish and shellfish can be farmed using methods that do not harm the environment and that help meet the growing demand for seafood by supplementing wild harvests.

Aquaculture can provide large and consistent quantities of fish and seafood. The addition of aquacultural stocks such as salmon and oysters into the marketplace has helped meet current seafood demands.Aquaculture plays an important role in the economy, providing thousands of jobs in operations and ancillary services.

In order to obtain high production per hector of water body, fast growing compatible species of fish of different feeding habits are stocked together in the same pond so that all its ecological niches are occupied by fishes. This system of pond management is called mixed fish farming or composite fish culture. It is also known as polyculture.Selected species of indigenous and exotic carps are all compatible; they have different feeding habits and habitats in the same pond; so they are not competitors to each other for food and space. The foods of the different layers in pond-water are fully utilized by the carps in the composite fish culture or mixed culture. Induced breeding can also be done in the exotic carps and they are fast growing and the total production of fishes is very high and cost of production is less; this is also a profitable one.
