Question

Give one chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs:

Ethane and ethyne

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

Ethyne (C2H2) is a hydrocarbon that contains a Carbon-Carbon triple bond.

Ethane (C2H6) is a hydrocarbon that contains a Carbon-Carbon single bond.

Step 2: Chemical test

There is a test to distinguish between Ethyne and Ethane:

Treatment of Ammoniacal Silver Nitrate (AgNO3)

When Ammoniacal Silver nitrate is added to Ethyne (C2H2) then it gives white precipitates. But when Ammoniacal Silver nitrate is added to Ethane (C2H6) then no reaction occurs and no precipitates obtain.

Reaction with Ethyne and Ammoniacal Silver Nitrate is:

C2H2+2AgNO3+2NH4OHC2Ag2+2NH4NO3+2H2OEthyneWhiteppt.

Reaction with Ethane and Ammoniacal Silver Nitrate is:

C2H6+2AgNO3+2NH4OHnoreactionEthane
