Give one chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compound: Acetone and phenol

Solution

When acetone is heated with iodine solution and aq. solution of NaOH in water bath, yellow crystal of idoform are obtained having a characteristic odour.
$C H_{3} C O C H_{3} + 3 I_{2} + 4 N a O H \to C H I_{3} + C H_{3} C O O N a + 3 N a I + 3 H_{2} O$
Phenol does not give this test.
