Decomposition Reaction:

A reaction in which a single substance splits into two or more simple substances under suitable conditions.

ABA+B

Example of decomposition reaction carried out by applying heat:

When a decomposition reaction is carried out by heating, it is called thermal decomposition. When copper carbonate (CuCO3) is heated it breaks down to form copper oxide (CuO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

CuCO3(s)CuO(s)+CO2(g).

Thus, thermal decomposition is an example of a decomposition reaction by applying heat.
