Question

Give one example of a monovalent monoatomic anion.

Open in App
Solution

Anion:

  • It is defined as a negatively charged ion which is formed when an atom gains an extra electron.
  • Since the ion formed is having more electrons than protons, hence carries a net negative charge.
  • An example of anion is Cl-which is formed when a chlorine atom gains one extra electron to complete its octet.

Monovalent anion:

  • An atom that gains only one electron and acquires net -1 negative charge is called as monovalent anion.
  • Example; chloride ion (Cl-), hydroxide ion (OH-) etc.

Monoatomic anion:

  • An ion with net negative charge which consists of exactly one atom is called as monoatomic anion.
  • Example; chloride ion (Cl-), bromide ion (Br-)etc.

Thus, an example of a monovalent monoatomic anion is chloride ion (Cl-).
