The reactions in which there occurs a replacement of the anions and cations among two compounds (reactants). This gives rise to another two new compounds (products) in which ions are exchanged.

2. Example of a reaction where a black precipitate is formed

An example of a reaction producing black precipitate is shown below.

H2Sg+CuSO4aqCuSs+H2SO4aqHydrogenCopperCopperSulphuricacidsulphidesulphatesulphide
When a reaction occurs between Hydrogen sulphide H2S and Copper sulphate CuSO4, a black precipitate of Copper sulphide CuS is formed.
