Seed:

A seed is a mature ovule. It consists of two important parts: seed coat and embryo.

(i) Cotyledons:

  • An embryo consists of three important parts: cotyledons, radicle, and plumule
  • Cotyledons are often fleshy and contain the reserve food material. This food is utilized during the early period of germination. Monocot seeds have one cotyledon and dicot seeds have two cotyledons.

(ii) Seed coat:

  • It is an outermost protective covering of a seed.

(iii) Radicle:

  • Radicle is also called embryonic root, it gives rise to the root of a plant on germination.
