Question

Give one reason why DNA is a better genetic material compared to RNA.

Open in App
Solution

DNA:

  1. The two polynucleotide chains make up Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA).
  2. These chains make a twisted ladder by coiling around each other.
  3. This twisted ladder holds genetic information and is known as a double helix because of its helix-like shape.
  4. Several organisms and viruses rely on this genetic instruction for their development and reproduction.
  5. DNA and ribonucleic acid are both nucleic acids.

RNA:

  1. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a nucleic acid that has structural similarities to DNA and is found in all living organisms.
  2. RNA, unlike DNA, is almost always single-stranded.
  3. Instead of the deoxyribose found in DNA, the backbone of an RNA molecule is made up of alternating phosphate groups and the sugar ribose.

The reason why DNA is better than RNA:

  1. RNA is known to be catalytic, thus reactive.
  2. DNA is less reactive chemically and more stable structurally in comparison to RNA.
  3. Hence, DNA is a better genetic material.
