Open in App
Solution

Aim: To demonstrate that ammonium chloride sublimes.

Procedure:

  1. Take some ammonium chloride.
  2. Grind it into a powder and put it in a china dish.
  3. Place an inverted funnel over the china dish as shown in the figure.
  4. Heat the china dish slowly.

Observation:

  1. Condensed vapors of ammonium chloride are observed on the walls of the funnel.
  2. The solid ammonium chloride on heating gets converted into vapor which gets condensed into the funnel.

Conclusion:

  1. This process of changing of solid state directly to a gaseous state without changing into a liquid state or vice versa is called sublimation.
  2. Thus we can say that ammonium chloride sublimes.
