Solution

  • Electrons are negatively charged particles revolving around the nucleus of an atom.
  • Atoms need to complete their duet or octet i.e., 2 or 8 electrons in their outermost orbit to become stable.
  • The atoms which have 4,5,6,7 or 8 electrons in their outermost shell receive the electrons from another element, to get stable.
  • This is the property of non-metals that they receive electrons to form anion i.e., negatively charged ion.
  • In an example of Chlorine(Cl) Non-metal atom having atomic number 17.
  • Its electrons are arranged in order of 2,8,7.
  • Hence, it has 7 electrons in its outermost shell, and it receives 1 electron to form Cl-ion.

Thus, the correct answer is non-metal.
