Water leaves a plant cell by osmosis when it is placed in a hypertonic or concentrated solution.
The cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall, and the protoplasm shrinks. Protoplasm no longer exerts pressure on the cell wall, and the cell becomes flaccid. The cell has been plasmolyzed, and the process is known as plasmolysis.
