Posterior pituitary

  1. It is also known as neurohypophysis.
  2. It is a part of endocrine system.
  3. It is a neural tissue mainly consists of the axons of hypothalamic magnocellular neurosecretory neurons.
  4. It is responsible for the storage and secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH).

Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) / Vasopressin:

  1. It is synthesized in the hypothalamus and is stored in the Herring Bodies or neurosecretory bodies of posterior pituitary.
  2. It acts on Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT) and Collecting duct of nephrons and increases the reabsorption of water.
  3. It prevents diuresis (production of large quantity of dilute urine).
