Nylon is made by the polymerization of adipic acid (1, 6-hexanedioic acid) and hexamethylene diamine (1, 6-diamino hexane).
$n H O O C - (C H_{2})_{4} - C O O H + n H_{2} N - (C H_{2})_{6} - N H_{2} \to$ $[- O C - (C H_{2})_{4} - C O - N H - (C H_{2})_{6} - N H -]_{n} + (2 n - 1) H_{2} O$
It is obtained by condensation polymerization.
Nylon is used in making the bristles of brushes, carpets, and fabrics.
