Question

Give reason:

(a) Alkali metals are kept in an inert solvent.

Solution

(a) Alkali metals are kept in an inert solvent because they are very reactive in nature and if they are kept without any inert solution then they will vigorously react with air and explode.

(b) Alkali metals and halogens both are very reactive in nature.

Alkali metals are very reactive metals as they have the capacity to lose electrons and halogens are very reactive non-metals as they have the capacity to gain electrons that's the reason why both either alkali metals or halogens both cant be found in a free state in nature.

(c) Yes, alkali metals and alkaline earth metals both have the capacity to form electrovalent compounds because both of them are very reactive metals and have the capacity to lose electrons.

Alkali metals can lose one electron to gain noble gas configuration while alkaline earth metals have the capacity to lose two electrons to gain noble gas configuration.

When any element loses or gains electrons it will form an ionic bond and the compound is called s electrovalent compound.

(d) Inert gases have a complete octet( complete octet means 8 electrons in its outer shell) that's why they don't react with any other element to form any compound.

Although inert gases can also react but in very special conditions.
