Question

Give reason as to why-the electrolysis of acidulated water is considered to be an example of catalysis.

Open in App
Solution

As pure water does not contain ions, sulphuric acid is added to it to generate ions, so that the electrolysis of water can take place. Sulphuric acid acts as a catalyst, as it increases the rate of reaction without being involved in the reaction. The net change in the mass of sulphuric acid utilised in the electrolysis is nil. Thus, electrolysis of acidulated water is considered as an example of catalysis.
