Give reason for potato cubes when placed in water become firm and increase in size.

Endosmosis:

  1. It is a type of osmosis, in which water enters the cell from the surroundings.
  2. Endosmosis occurs if the external solution is hypotonic.
  3. Here, endosmosis is seen as water enters the potato cubes from the surroundings.
  4. As a result, potato cubes swell and become firm, and also their sizes get increase.

In water potato cubes become firm and increase in size— reason:

  1. Cells of potato cubes contain more salts and sugars than their surrounding water.
  2. For this reason, water molecules (solvent) from the surrounding, enter the potato cubes by the process called ‘endosmosis'.
