Solution

Carbon dioxide gas as a fire extinguisher:

  • A carbon dioxide fire extinguisher is a device used to control small fires caused due to electricity and inflammable liquids like kerosene, petrol, diesel, etc.
  • In a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, carbon dioxide gas is filled and stored under high pressure in the form of a liquid.
  • When released, carbon dioxide shoots out and expands enormously in volume.
  • It displaces or takes away oxygen from the surrounding area extinguishing a fire.
  • Carbon dioxide also works by cooling the combustible substance below its ignition temperature.
