Question

Give reason.
(i) Electron affinity of halogens is comparatively high.

Solution

Electron affinity of halogens are high

The atomic sizes of halogens are very small. The smaller the atomic size, the greater will be the electron affinity. This is because, the effective attractive force between the nucleus and the valence electrons is greater in smaller atoms and as a result, the electrons inside the atom are held firmly. Hence, due to small atomic size and greater force of attraction, the electron affinity of halogens is comparatively high.
