Question

Give reason: “Liquids cannot be compressed much”.

Open in App
Solution

  1. In contrast to gases, liquids have a (nearly) constant volume regardless of their pressure but conform to the shape of their containers.
  2. As its particles are still close together, there are only very small gaps between them.
  3. When a liquid is compressed, molecular forces become very strong, making compression difficult.
  4. Liquids can't easily be compressed and kept at the same volume since the particles are still close together.
