Question

Give reason: Organisms exhibiting external fertilization show great synchrony between the sexes and release a large number of gametes into surrounding medium.

Solution

Synchrony between sexes ensures that gametes are released at the nearly same time in the external medium. While a large number of gametes are released so that even if a large number of them are destroyed, few of them remain viable for fertilisation.
Both of these measures are evolved to increase the chances of fertilisation.
