The travelling of sound is called propagation of sound and it needs a medium to propagate.
The requirement of medium is due to the fact that sound energy is transferred from one particle to another by vibration in the medium .
Medium of propagation of sound includes gas ,liquid and solid.
Thus sound needs a medium to propagate through a medium.
