Parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat are drought prone because the southwest monsoon winds lose moisture by the time they reach Gujarat and Rajasthan. Moreover, these regions lie on the leeward side of the Western Ghats and do not fall in the direction of rain bearing winds. The Southwest Monsoon winds bring much rain to windward side of the Western Ghats with the rain bearing clouds striking the Ghats and causing rain. The Aravallis lie parallel to the southwest monsoon winds and thus donot cause rainfall in parts of Rajasthan.
