Solution

Buffer: A solution that assists in maintaining the pH of a solution is termed a buffer. It is also termed as any substance that is able to maintain the persistent state by resisting a change in it.

Water acts as a temperature buffer in the following manner:

  1. Water has a high heat capacity.
  2. It is able to absorb heat from its surroundings and leave behind a cooling impact.
  3. Thus, water imparts a cooling impact during extreme hot climatic conditions.
  4. This is the reason that areas lying closer to water bodies have a fairly constant climate throughout the year.
