Solution

Water is pulled from the roots to the top of the plant because:

  1. Water moves into the roots through the process known as osmosis, due to the low solute potential in the roots than in soil.
  2. This intake of water in the roots increases pressure in the root xylem, driving water up.
  3. In extreme situation, root pressure results in the guttation, or secretion of water droplets from stomata in the leaves.
