Question

Give the reason why a delta is formed at the meeting point of seawater and river water.

Open in App
Solution

  • Delta is formed at the meeting point of seawater and river water because seawater contains a lot of electrolytes and the river water is a colloidal solution of sand and clay.
  • Hence, when colloidal particles meet the electrolytes of the seawater, neutralization of electrolytes takes place which results in the precipitation of sand, clay, etc which forms a delta.
