Question

Give reasons for the following: 1. Camel is able to move fast on land. 2. Trucks meant to carry heavy loads have broad Tyres. 3. Cutting and piercing tools like knives and needles have sharp blades or points. 4. Shoulder bags have broad straps.

Solution

1)Camel can move fast and also run on the sand easily because they have wide feet which help them to balance their weight on loose sand and wider feet gives a larger surface area also that can be covered in one step.
2)Wide tyres are used in heavy vehicles like truck to spread the force over the large area of contact and pressure at a point becomes low since
pressure= force/area
So, larger the area in contact lesser the pressure in tyre and more is grip on road because the weight of truck is spread over the area
One more example is the tracks of trains in between two rail lines, there are lots of horizontal wooden timbers or tracks for the same reason.
3)The cutting tools have sharp edges because the sharp edge has very less surface area and it can easily cut through objects. Also we can exert more pressure on less area surface. Lesser the area more the pressure
4)In order to lower the pressure exerted on the users. Noted that the equation of pressure is Force/Surface Area. Therefore the wider the straps the lesser the pressure
