Give reasons for the following,

A gas can be easily compressed.

Solution

Explanation:

  1. Gases do not have fixed shape and volume.
  2. Intermolecular force of attraction between the molecules of a gas is almost negligible.
  3. So, there is a very large intermolecular space between gas molecules.
  4. Thus on mere applying pressure, they are easily compressed.
  5. Due to its high compressibility, a large amount of gas can be put in a small cylinder by compression.
