Give reasons for the following :
(a) Liquid ammonia is used as a refrigerant in ice plants.
(b) Aqueous solution of ammonia is used for removing grease stains from woollen clothes.
(c) Aqueous solution of ammonia gives a pungent smell.
(d) Aqueous solution of ammonia conducts electricity.
(a) Ammonia absorbs large amounts of heat quantities without changing its own temperature when it vaporises, and evaporation of liquids needs heat energy. Ammonia boils at a temperature of -28°F. In refrigeration systems, the liquid is stored in closed containers under pressure. When the pressure is released, the liquid evaporates rapidly, generally forming an invisible vapor or gas. This is why ammonia is used in refrigeration systems.
(b) Aqueous ammonia is alkaline and so acts soap over dirt or grease i.e, it emulsifies the grease stains and remove them.
(c) Ammonia is formed by the bacterial decomposition of urea, therefore ammonia has pungent smell. Also when you add water to ammonia to make aqueous solution the diffused ammonia between air water interface gets concentrated and gives rise to this smell.
(d) Aqueous ammonia forms ammonium hydroxide which has NH+4 OH− free ions that makes it conduct electricity.
