Question

Give reasons for the following :

(a) Measurement of osmotic pressure method is preferred for the determination of molar masses of macromolecules such as proteins and polymers.

(b) Aquatic animals are more comfortable in cold water than in warm water.

(c) Elevation of boiling point of 1 M KCI solution is nearly double than that of 1 M sugar solution.

Solution

(a) Because macromolecules such as proteins and polymers are generally not stable at higher temperature and osmotic pressure is measured at room temperature.

(b) Because O2 is more soluble in cold water at low temperature.

(c) Due to dissociation of KCl as KCIK++CI, the number of particles of solute KCl increase, so colligative property (elevation in boiling point) also increases but there is no such dissociation in Sugar solution.
