Solution

An athlete runs a distance before taking the leap so as to build his momentum so that he can jump a longer distance.
As athlete starts running, his velocity starts increasing and as momentum is product of mass and velocity, it also starts increasing. When he finally makes the jump, he can cover a longer distance due to larger momentum.
