give reasons for the following
(1) Titanium is called strategic metals
(2) non metals do not form positively charged ions
(3) Aluminium is a reactive metal but does not easily corrode is Iron metal

Solution

Dear Student

1. Titanium and Chromium are called strategic metals as they are essential for country’s economy and defence.

These metals have high tensile strength, high corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, high crack resistance, and ability to withstand moderately high temperatures without sneaking; they are used in aircraft, naval ships, space crafts and missiles, propeller shafts and rigging, etc. These applications are important from national as well as industrial point of view and hence termed strategic for their importance in development of any country or its economy.

2. Non metals have the tendency to gain electrons. An electronegative element is one which attracts electrons towards itself and is capable to gain electrons and form anions. Non-metals like F, Cl, O are capable to gain electrons and form anions.

3. Actually Aluminium when exposed to air ,reacts with the oxygen to form Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) thus this upper layer of aluminium oxide protects the aluminium metal from corrosion. Whereas Iron when exposed to air reacts to form Iron(III) Oxide which is know as rust and this rust corrodes the inner metal also.
