Question

Give reasons for the following:

Gases can be compressed easily

Open in App
Solution

Gases are compressible:

  • In gases, atoms, and molecules are more widely spaced than solids or liquids.
  • They vibrate and move at faster rates.
  • A gas will fill any container, but the gas will escape if the container is not sealed.
  • The intermolecular space between gas molecules is particularly large compared to that of solids and liquids.
  • They can be easily squeezed by applying pressure which reduces their intermolecular space and makes the particles come closer.

Thus, gases can be compressed easily.
