Green Revolution
The great improvement in the production of food grains and other agricultural produce during the period 1960-80 is described as Green Revolution in Indian agriculture.
It is known as the Golden Era of Indian agriculture.
The food production was enhanced to such an extent that our country became self-sufficient in food production because of development of high-yielding varieties (HYV) of rice, maize, bajra, sugarcane, etc. by our scientists.
During Green Revolution, high-yielding dwarf varieties of wheat were introduced from Mexico and Australia.
New varieties of wheat with desirable characteristics were developed by cross-breeding methods.
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug is called Father of Green Revolution.
He and his team developed high-yielding variety of wheat and introduced them in Mexico.
This was named Triple dwarf mexican wheat variety.
For this achievement Dr. Borlaug was awarded Nobel Prize in 1970.
In India, Green Revolution was achieved by the efforts of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan.
He introduced this Mexican variety of wheat in India.
Green Revolution has made our country self sufficient in food, enhanced production to surplus for export, improved economic condition of farmers and farm labourers and has also increased employment opportunities.
