Solution

Carbon monoxide(CO) is produced during burning of carbon-rich compounds in limited supply of oxygen or due to incomplete burning of fuels like coal, wood, petrol, kerosene etc.

It is advised not to stand behind a vehicle with a running engine because:

  • Carbon monoxide is highly toxic.
  • So, when this combines with haemoglobin in the red blood cells(RBCs) present in our blood, it forms a complex compound called Carbaminohaemoglobin as a result of which RBC is enable to carry oxygen.
  • This reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of blood and ultimately death happens due to suffocation.
