Question

Give reasons for the following observations:
(1) ionic compounds in general have high melting and boiling points
(2) highly reactive metals cannot be obtained from their oxides by heating them with carbon
(3) metal sulphide and carbonate is converted to metal oxides in the process of extraction is metal

Solution

Dear Student

1. They have high melting and boiling points because they have a strong force of attraction between their ions in order to overcome this strong bond high amount of heat is required. therefore they have high melting and boiling points.

2. Highly reactive metals have strong affinity for the oxygen as compared to the carbon. Hence carbon is unable to remove oxygen from the metal oxide to convert them to free metal atom.

Post other part in separate thread to have rapid assistance from our experts.
