Give reasons for the following statements:

Plants that grow in marshy area have breathing roots.

Breathing roots:

  1. Plants that grow in marshy areas are exposed to saline water.
  2. These plants fail to absorb oxygen from the soil in the marshy areas and hence the roots extend vertically upward from the soil.
  3. These roots have small pores in them which helps with exchange of gasses between the plant and atmosphere and hence are called breathing roots.
