Solution

  • Anything which occupies space and has mass is called matter.
  • Air and water; rocks and minerals; are all different kinds of matter because all of them occupy space (that is, they have volume), and mass.
  • The three states of matter are solids, liquids, and gases
  • They have different properties, which can be explained by looking at the arrangement of their particles.
  • In solids, the particles are tightly packed together. In liquids, the particles have more movement, while in gases, they are spread out.
  • These particles have an attractive force acting between them which is commonly known as intermolecular forces of attraction.
  • Solids have maximum intermolecular forces of attraction while gases have minimum intermolecular forces of attraction.
  • Due to above reasons they possess different properties.
