The muscle cells respire anaerobically during heavy exercise.

Anaerobic respiration:

  1. Anaerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose in absence of oxygen that forms lactic acid and less amount of energy.
  2. When an individual does heavy exercise their muscles demand more oxygen.
  3. For a very short period of time, muscle cells lack oxygen which leads to the formation of lactic acid (due to anaerobic conditions).
