Question

Give reasons for the following:

Why is it better to transplant a seedling in the evening and not in the morning?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Because the amount of water absorbed exceeds the amount lost through transpiration, planting in the evening allows seedlings to adjust for a longer period of time during the night.
  2. The seedlings are stressed as a result of transplantation. If the seedlings are transplanted in the morning, they will face the additional stress of excessive transpiration during the hot afternoon.
  3. The stomata of the plants will close in the evening, slowing the loss of water through the leaves.
