Colloidal Solutions A heterogeneous solution in which the particle size is between 10-7cm to 10-5 cm, such that the solute particles neither dissolve nor settle down in a solvent is called a colloidal solution.
In a colloidal solution, relatively large suspended particles are called the dispersed phase, and the solvent in which the colloidal particles are suspended is called the continuous phase or dispersing medium.
Colloidal solutions do not settle down and are always in motion.
Brownian motion: Zig-zag motion (in a very irregular way) of suspended particles in colloidal solution is known as Brownian motion.
