Solution

(a) In ice plants, liquid ammonia is utilized as a refrigerant:-

To vaporize, liquid ammonia requires a lot of energy (heat) from the environment. Because anhydrous ammonia evaporates quickly and generates a cooling effect, it is a suitable refrigerant.

Ammonia's advantages as a refrigerant:-

  • It does not contribute to global warming and does not damage the ozone layer.
  • Ammonia refrigerants consume less electricity than other refrigerants
  • Ammonia leakage is immediately detectable due to its distinct odour.

Ammonia's disadvantages:-

  • Ammonia cannot be utilised in any system with copper pipes
  • It is a toxic gas that has no effect on life on Earth
