Solution

1. Absolute poverty refers to a situation wherein an individual is unable to fulfil even the basic necessities required for sustenance of life such as food, clothing and shelter. In India absolute poverty is expressed in terms of minimum calories requirements per person per day. Those who are unable to earn an income to consume such specified minimum calories are categorised as absolute poor. This type of poverty can be reduced or eradicated over the time with an increase in the income of the people.

2. Poverty is very much responsible for the degradation of environment. This is because poor people are dependent on the nature for their basic survival and livelihood. If there is an increase in the poverty levels, the extraction and exploitation of natural resources increases further. This leads to environment degradation and its over usage. Hence, we can say that poverty is one of the major factors that leads to environmental damage and degradation.

3. Vicious circle of poverty is one of the primary causes for poverty in India. The low income of the poor people leads to low consumption and thereby lowers the savings. This in turn leads to low investment, limiting the capital formation and thus, leads to low production. All this results in low level of national income and per capita income thereby, initiating the cycle again. Hence the poverty level and the disparities among the people keep on increasing causing a never-ending phenomenon of poverty.

4. Rural poverty refers to the poverty prevailing in the rural areas. Herein, if an individual living in a rural area is unable to consume a minimum of 2400 calories, then he considered to be a rural poor. The concept of rural poverty needs special care by the government as the conditions in which the rural poor live are highly miserable. Such people are characterized by sickness, malnutrition, lack of basic needs, unhygienic living conditions, illiteracy and are mostly exploited by the money lenders and land-lords. Such miserable conditions often provoke rural poor to take extreme steps such as suicide. Thus, the government of India needs to take some concrete measures in order to alleviate rural poverty from India.

5. Rising population is an important cause of poverty in India. This is because with high population, the level of income averages out on a larger number of people and thus, decreases. This in turn results in poverty. Low population, on the other hand, will increase the per capita income level and thus, will help in reducing poverty. Hence, the government should aim at promoting family planning programs in order to reduce the level of population in the country which will help reducing poverty in the country.
