• Sun is the source of energy for each and every life form that is present on earth.
• In detritus food chain the organisms mainly feed on the dead and decaying organisms or the waste that is produced by the organisms of the gracing food cahin.
• The dead and the decaying organims can also be the plants and plants part that have died or are of no longer use; also the animals (which feed on the plants) when they dead their body and the waste that is produced by them are added to the detritus food chain.
• Therefore we can say that the sun is the source of energy for the detritus food chain.

• The major food for the organism of the DFC is dead, waste or the decay that is produced by the living organisms.
• The waste that is produces in the land eventually along with the water runs down and settles in to the water bodies it may be river, pond or ocean.
• The amount that is accumulated in the bottom of the water body is very high. The bottom dwelling organisms in the water which feed on these organism matter is large. The break down the organic matter to inorganic component which can be used by the aquatic plants and the phytoplanktons in the water. Some of these organisms are also the prey of the animals in the other food chain.
• Thus Detritus food chain is a major conduit of energy in the aquatic system.
