Solution

Dear student,

The reasons why democracy failed in Sri Lanka during the civil war are-
  1. In the beginning of 23 July 1983, there was an intermittent insurgency against the government by the Velupillai Prabhakaran led LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Tigers Eelam) also known as Tamil tigers. The LTTE fought to create an independent Tamil state called Tamil Eelam in the north-east of the island, due to constant discrimination and violent persecution against Sri Lankan Tamils by the Sinhalese dominated Sri Lankan Government.
  2. The civil war was waged for over a quarter of century, with 70,000 people being killed by 2007. Immediately following the end of war, more people were killed. The Sri Lankan government repeatedly refused an independent investigation to ascertain the full impact of war, knowing this was something that the public wanted. This was the main reason that led to the failed democracy in Sri Lanka during the civil war.
  3. At the end of civil war, the Sri Lankan government have been subject to much global criticism for violating human rights as a result of committing war crimes through bombing civilian targets, usage of heavy weapons, massacres of Sri Lankan Tamils etc. All these reasons collectively contributed to the failed democracy of Sri Lankan government.
