Question

Give reasons why:
Sodium Chloride will conduct electricity only in fused or aqueous solution state.

Solution

Sodium Chloride:

  1. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is a solid and ionic compound that has strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
  2. If the solid-state, NaCl does not contain free electrons in it.
  3. Thus, it is not able to conduct electricity.
  4. But in an aqueous or fused state, Sodium Chloride can undergo the process of electrolysis.
  5. Since the free electrons are present or NaCl releases it during the electrolysis, it can conduct electricity easily.
  6. Only in the fused or aqueous solution, does NaCl form ions that ions are capable of conducting electricity.
