Question

Give reasons

Liquids possess more kinetic energy than solids.

Solution

  1. The kinetic energy of the molecules of a substance can be defined as the average energy associated with the molecule due to its vibrational motion.
  2. Kinetic energy of the molecules is in inverse relation with the intermolecular force of attraction.
  3. The particles which make up solids, as well as liquids, are bound together by these intermolecular forces.
  4. So, in liquids, the intermolecular force of attraction is less as compared to solids.
  5. The less intermolecular force of attraction means more kinetic energy for the molecules.
  6. Thus, we can say that liquid possesses more kinetic energy than solids.
