(a) Diamond is the hardest of all the known substances and is unaffected by any chemicals. Hence, diamond is used as a cutting material.

(b) Carbon dioxide gas neither burns nor supports burning. When a burning substance is surrounded by air, the supply of oxygen gas gets cut off and, thus, burning stops. Hence, carbon dioxide is used for putting out fires.
