Solution

(a) Coins are made from the metal sheets by turning them into required thickness and obtaining blanks of required size and shape from these sheets. Gold and silver both are highly malleable metals. Also, they are very less reactive, which prevents them from corrosion. Hence, gold and silver are used to make coins.

(b) Pure gold (24−carat) is very soft. Ornaments made from pure gold can bend or break easily. Also, they are worn out if handled frequently. Hence, pure gold is not used for making ornaments.

(c) Modern ships are made up of iron that easily and continuously gets corroded by the chemicals in sea water and air, so ships are painted at frequent intervals.

(d) Gold and platinum are least reactive elements, so they are called noble elements.

(e) Newly polished iron objects have a greyish lustre that is lost by the rusting while polished stainless steel objects have silver bright lustre that is not easily corroded. So, stainless steel has more lustre than iron objects.
