Solution
Arteries:
Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to various parts of the body from the heart.
They are thick walled and have a small lumen or central space through which blood flows.
Reason for blood flow in spurts and under pressure in arteries:
As the arteries carry oxygenated blood to the distant parts of the body from the heart, they are under the direct pumping action of the heart resulting in high pressure within them.
The lumen of the arteries are also small making the blood to flow through a small space thereby creating pressure.
